Everyone has a little bit of astigmatism.

When I hear a patient tell me they have never been able to wear contact lenses because of astigmatism, I think of two things. First, as a contact lens specialist I believe there is a good lens for every person if they are patient enough to find the lens and their desire to wear lenses is strong enough. If you really want contact lenses but have never been able to get them, I want you to know it is possible to get you in a lens that you can be happy with. Second, I wonder if the person might have a problem with his/her cornea (the clear front of the eye) that has prevented them from finding a lens that provides clear comfortable vision.

Everyone has a little bit of astigmatism. There are very few individuals that I measure that have zero astigmatism. I wanted to write this to reach out to those whose astigmatism is high enough to really affect the clarity of vision.

If that qualifier describes you, I want you to ask yourself some questions.

  1. Could you have a corneal condition? (The likelihood of this is very high—something called keratoconus which affects at least 1 in every 1000 patients.)
  2. Does your vision and/or glasses prescription vary from day to day or from year to year?
  3. Do you very much want to wear contact lenses?

If you internet searched “keratoconus” after reading that first question, you probably found pictures of the worst forms of the disease. Just because your eyes don’t look like those pictures, it doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have the condition. If you’re not sure if you have it, and find out that you do after an office visit, it is highly unlikely that your eye will ever look like the pictures in your search.I would love to help you (whether or not there is keratoconus). If you want contacts, I can provide ones that are the most comfortable to you. With your patience in the solution-making process, we can get you contacts you will be happy with. The same applies if you want contacts so you can go hang out at the beach with your sunglasses, or just because you don’t like the thick lenses in your glasses.
